The Crocodile is out! Finally, someone had the guts to send the Dark One riding on his high horse out of Storybrooke. I never thought I’d say this but I’m actually quite startled that Mr. Gold will no longer be a part of Storybrooke… or will he? Mr. Gold was not called ‘The Crocodile’ by sheer coincidence. He dubbed that name since he always had something up his sleeves. However, at this point in time, Storybrooke has been liberated from the mysterious, diabolical and backstabbing Mr. Gold – all thanks to his one ‘true love’, Belle. While Mr. Gold has been ousted from his throne (indeed villains don’t win), here’s what he might just send back to Storybrooke if he can’t return.
The Malevolent Maleficent
Disney is surely milking as many fairy tale characters as they can. It’s not surprising that Disney would unleash something as powerful as Maleficent (Kristin Bauer van Straten) on Storybrooke since Angelina Jolie’s Maleficent tore up the box office. What the heck…Bauer van Straten’s evil sells and it’s now crawling its way back to Storybrooke to assume its throne. If this Maleficent is as powerful as revealed on Disney’s ‘Villains list’, Storybrooke will have an insurmountable price to pay.
We’ve not seen much of Maleficent in Storybrooke. While we know what look she’ll assume, we don’t necessarily know what she has in store for us. However, if she’s going to assume the original Maleficent, she just might turn out to be the lonely, psychopathic and bird talking Maleficent we know. In fact, the last we saw of her in Storybrooke she was trapped in a cave as a terrifying fire breathing dragon. She was later ‘slain’ by Emma in the finale of Season 1. As we know, nothing really dies in Storybrooke so her comeback is not a shocker. Maleficent was subsequently seen assuming a zombie form in the latter part of Season 2. While Maleficent makes her way back to Storybrooke, we can also look out for Diablo, Maleficent’s wings and spy, unfailingly accompanying her on her quest to royalty. Maleficent is inevitably re-introduced to us in ‘Heroes and Villains’ as a power thirsty woman along with her pack of goons. She was bent on becoming Queen when she double-crossed the Dark One and several years later she remains with such a heart.
The Rise of the Octopus: Ursula
Ursula is likened to an Octopus and rightly so. However, unlike an Octopus, Ursula’s tentacles have been reduced by two. Instead of the usual eight, Disney’s Ursula has six tentacles. We did not see much of Ursula, at least the new cast to play her role, but we did see Regina in action as the extra limbed one. With the return of Season 4, Merrin Dungey will join the cast of OUAT. We’re not sure as to how many tentacles Merrin will boast, but we do know she’ll be the Queen of the sea and unrestricted by water. Like Ariel, Ursula will grow some legs to fish with the humans.
The Little Mermaid villain was previously voiced by Yvette Nicole Brown who made her first appearance in the series in Season 3. This appearance was made to address Regina who impersonated her in an attempt to deceive the little mermaid, Ariel. Regina did not lay eyes on Ursula but did hear her voice coming from a mirror.
The Barbaric Cruella De Vil
I’m definitely not one for aesthetics, but if Cruella comes to Storybrooke in that ratchet wig, many fanatics will roll out. I’m sorry, but Cruella needs to get her hair straight…but I digress. Selena Gomez sang about Cruella and from what I’ve heard, she’s no one to mess with. Cruella De Vil, a play on the term cruel and devil, made her initial appearance in the 1956 novel The Hundred and One Dalmatians by Dodie Smith as the predominant antagonist. Cruella subsequently appeared in spin offs. In all her appearances, De Vil stole Dalmatian puppies for their fur. Her rational for skinning puppies holds strongly on the concept that short-haired dogs have very rough furs when they grow older. Coarse furs do not do well in terms of revenue within the fur fashion industry.
Undoubtedly, Cruella de Vil (Victoria Smurfit) will return to Once Upon a Time rolling out in her Panther De Ville car. The Bat mobile has nothing on Cruella’s ride. Unfortunately, there are not many Dalmatian pups in Storybrooke so Cruella definitely needs to get another source to accumulate her furs.
Evil is made…not born
A catch with the introduction of Maleficent, Ursula and Cruella is that viewers will be able to love, sympathize and hate their characters. We’ve always heard that “evil was made and not born”. Finally, we’ll get to discern what led these three ‘Queens’ to become so evil. Throughout Season 4 the curtains will most likely be opened for Maleficent, Ursula and Cruella. We’ll get a chance to see through their eyes and eventually feel what they felt. Until OUAT returns for Season 4 on March 1, that’s a wrap.
